#53 | GRAND PALACE AND WAT PHO

The Grand Palace was more crowded than Disneyland. Even walking through the entrance (and out the same way) was a challenge. There was no way you could get through without a bit of push and shove. There is also a very strict dress code for the Grand Palace; arms and legs must be covered. For those who weren't aware, clothes can be borrowed for a deposit, and you can expect there to be a line. The money will be returned in full once the garments are brought back.

Within the grounds of the Grand Palace lies Wat Phra Kaew, or the Temple of the Emerald Buddha. Beautifully decorated, it is regarded as one of the most important Buddhist temple in Thailand.

After the Grand Palace we walked over to Wat Pho. It's about a 10 minute walk, but had felt much longer because of the heat. The highlight of this visit is the glorious Reclining Buddha. Again, as this is a place of worship, visitors are expected to be dressed appropriately.

To get to the Grand Palace, we took the Silom Line and got off at Saphan Taksin station. There are signs at the station that will direct you down the stairs to the Sathorn Bridge Pier. There a number of boat services that operate from this pier, but the one you'll want is the Chao Phraya Express Boat with the orange flag. Tickets are purchased on the boat, and you'll be alighting at Pier N8 at Tha Thien. From here, it'll be a short walk to the Grand Palace and Wat Pho.
