#66 | THE GENTLE GIANTS AT ELEPHANT NATURE PARK

CHIANG MAI, THAILAND

Elephant Nature Park is an elephant rescue and rehabilitation centre. It has a strong focus on elephants, but also cares for other animals like dogs, cats and buffaloes. Our day started with a feeding session for the elephants, and in our group, we were given a basket full of watermelons to feed them with. We were then taken further into the park to meet some more elephants. During the walk, our guide shared their rescue stories with us and we learned that many of them here are either partially blind or have been seriously injured at one stage in their life.

After lunch (a delicious vegetarian buffet), we walked towards the river where a herd of elephants was being bathed. It was so much fun watching the mischievous baby elephant being washed. After their bath, it was time to roll around in the mud and sand. This acts to provide their skin with a coating to keep them cool and safe from the harsh sun. We were then given some time to spend with the dogs and cats that were also at this park before heading back into the city.

Not only did we enjoy our time at Elephant Nature Park, but it was also a highly educational experience. If you want to visit a park that takes good care of their animals, then this is the one for you.
