TOKYO, JAPAN
We started off our afternoon exploration of Harajuku with a visit to the Meiji-Jingu Shrine. The Shinto Shrine was very peaceful and serene, and we were lucky that there was actually a traditional wedding taking place that day, so we were able to get a glimpse of that. We then strolled down Takeshita-dori, a place well known for it's trendy teen fashion shops, cafes and restaurants. After browsing the streets and munching on a lot of snacks, we ended our visit with dinner at Maisen Tonkatsu.
Funny story about Maisen. It was a bit of a trek from Takeshita-dori, but we thought we had finally found the place after seeing the Maisen sign on a street pole. There was hardly anyone there except another couple next to us, and it wasn't until after opening up the menu that I realised we went into the wrong restaurant.
I grabbed my phone and walked out - pretending to be in the middle of sending and receiving messages. Walking down the street a little, I saw another Maisen sign, the one that actually belonged to the restaurant! The sign we saw earlier seems to have been put up to point to this one! I walked back into the restaurant and we discussed our next action. It must have been so obvious that we were putting together an escape plan, because the waitress who took us in initially, came over and asked if we were actually looking for Maisen. We both nodded, embarrassed. She laughed and said, "I'll get you the bill" (since we had ordered drinks).
As we walked out, she very warmly said that she hopes we come back another time to try this place out. Wasn't that just so nice? We ended on a good note that night, and had the most amazing tonkatsu ever.
