SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA
When did brunch become so popular in Sydney? Or have I just been living under a rock?
Either way, I'm loving it.
We were at Reuben Hills one Sunday morning after it was recommended to me by a friend. After a 20 minute wait, we were taken in, and given a seat at a long white-tiled table near the front. Nestled in the quiet part of Surry Hills, Reuben Hills serves up Central and South American style food and some pretty good coffee. There were a lot on the menu that we wanted to try, but with the 2 of us there, we could only go as far as sharing 3 dishes (with difficulty).
Soft Baked Eggs with chorizo, kale, ranchero, and rye
The NOT Reuben sandwich with a wagyu salt brisket, pickled slaw, manchego, and horseradish mayo on rye
Really F**King Great Fried Chicken with chilli in a basket
I loved the baked eggs. A spoonful of that hot egg and sauce on a bit of toast was like a party in my mouth. The flavours were very nice, and the kale worked well to give the dish a little more texture. There were a lot of mmmm's and ahhhh's coming from my foodie in crime next to me with every bite of the Not Reuben sandwich. He obviously enjoyed it. The brisket was a little too salty for my liking, but the slaw did help cut through it to some extent. We also added some habanero sauce to the sandwich to give it a bit of kick.
There was just no way we wouldn't give the "really f**king great" fried chicken a try; not with a name like that. The fried chicken was brought out in a basket on top of a piece of tortilla with some pickled chilli and 2 types of dipping sauce - creamy aioli and salsa. The chicken was moist, tender and had some good flavour, but the name hyped it up a little too much.
