#23 | GHIBLI MUSEUM

TOKYO, JAPAN

The Ghibli Museum showcases the works of Miyazaki Hayao's Studio Ghibli through animation and interaction. The museum is located at Mitaka, an area just outside central Tokyo, and to get here, there is a minibus to and from Mitaka Station and the museum. It is important to note that tickets need to be purchased in advance. You can find them at any Lawson convenience store in Japan, but we got ours through a travel agent before leaving Sydney.

The Ghibli Museum was a wondrous place. Inside contained artworks, projections, dioramas, rooms that were filled with film-making inspirations, and a small theatre showing original animated shorts from Ghibli - ones created just for the museum. Up a spiral staircase to the rooftop garden lies a 5-metre tall Robot Soldier, a character from the film Laputa Castle in the Sky, and of course, no place is complete without a gift store. At the museum's shop Mama Aiuto, you'll find some original Ghibli merchandise including statues, plush toys and picture books.

Photography and video recording is strictly prohibited inside the museum, and the staff and signs there will reinforce that rule. Fortunately, photography outside is still allowed.
