The chocolate festival was my excuse to of course, eat chocolate - and a lot of it. It was held at The Rocks over the weekends on the 12th and 13th of September, and we attended on the Saturday. There were quite a number of stalls, and each were unique in what they offered. We started our chocolate binge with a gelato created through a collaboration between Anna Polyviou and N2 Extreme Gelato. It was a chocolate hazelnut gelato with hazelnut pieces and rice bubbles, a rice bubble choc top and chocolate ganache syringe - YUM. We then had a watermelon cake from the Black Star Pastry stall. It was made with white chocolate, but still tasted quite similar to the signature watermelon cake they have at their cafes.
Tamales are a traditional Mesoamerican dish made with steamed or boiled masa. This was the first time we tried a tamale, and unfortunately it wasn't a favourite. The exterior was of a crumbly bread-like texture, and together with the filling, was very dry. We then picked up some beautiful-looking eclairs from Passiontree Velvet, which weren't too bad, and finished off our visit with an amazing Chilean pork roll. The roll was filled with some oven roasted pork, slaw and coriander salsa (pebre), and everything went well together. It was definitely nice to have something savoury after all that chocolate.
