#20 | SHINJUKU & SHIBUYA

TOKYO, JAPAN

There is a wonderful thing in Japan called 'Depachikas'. The basement level in a Japanese department store lies a food market; an area selling ready to eat foods, beautifully packaged snacks, breads and perishable food items like vegetables and fish. We went to the Isetan department store at Shinjuku and the food market there was amazing. We walked around a few times before we were able to decide on what to buy, and ended up with some bread, Indian curry, teriyaki chicken on a skewer, as well as a cheesecake and cupcake from the Magnolia Bakery kiosk. Unfortunately, there are no seats or tables there, but there is an outdoor garden area on the highest floor of the building - which was where we went to eat.

The food was actually cold. I guess the intention was to eat it at home (or at work where it can be reheated), but regardless, it still tasted pretty good. Special mention to Magnolia Bakery. I had the most amazing New York Cheesecake and Peanut Butter and Jelly Cupcake. The best I've ever had.

After finishing our meal, we headed over to Shibuya. It was exactly as I imagined it to be - bustling with people and very lively. It was such a sight to be able to observe and also experience the scramble at the famous Shibuya Crossing. There's an intersection right outside the station, and when the lights turn red, it turns red in every direction. Traffic completely stops at this point in time, and pedestrians flood the walkway from all sides. Shibuya is a great shopping area and has a major night life, so you can come at anytime of the day or night, and you'll find yourself entertained.
