I was spoilt for my birthday this year. We celebrated with 2 wonderful dinners, one of which, was at BLACK Bar & Grill at The Star. We started the night with some homemade bread and a Moscow Mule cocktail with Ketel One vodka, ginger beer and lime. For entree, we had the Beef Tartare with heirloom beets, herb mayonnaise, mustard ice cream, puffed wild rice, and the grilled Lobster Tail with crustacean butter, charred onion, sorrel juice and rice cracker. The mayonnaise on the tartare tasted like McDonald's big mac sauce haha. I am not trying to say that the tartare was not delicious. It was actually REALLY yummy and very enjoyable, but it just reminded me of a big mac. For mains, we chose something from the wood burning grill; a 30-day dry-aged grain fed ribeye and a grass-fed Angus with creamy crab remoulade, pickled onion and fennel charred lemon, which was a February special. The steaks were juicy and were served with a complimentary platter of sauce which included house made steak sauce, dijon mustard, horseradish cream, Harissa and chimichurri. We also had some sides to go with our steaks; the mac and cheese with three cheese sauce and bacon crumbs, broccolini with lemon dressing and toasted almonds as well as a bowl of cos lettuce salad with anchovies, wood grilled bacon and egg dressing. You can imagine how full we were after this meal. It was definitely too much for just the two of us, but we did pretty much finish everything. We didn't even bother looking at the dessert menu because anymore food and we'll need to be rolled home! But the staff knew we were here to celebrate a birthday, so they organised a small slice of carrot cake and brought it over to me while singing the birthday song, which was just such a nice thing for them to do. They did sing it softly so it's not like the entire restaurant could hear it, which was what I preferred if something like this had to be done. Otherwise, it would have been a tad embarrassing. We had a fantastic night at BLACK, and I would definitely recommend this place to celebrate an occasion.
