Gyro over Rice

Chicken Sandwich

Ok everyone, if you're after a cheap eat in New York, look no further than The Halal Guys. They are a food cart with a few locations on 53rd St and they offer some of the best Middle Eastern food for under $10. Best of all, they are generous with their servings! We had a gyro (beef) platter with rice, lettuce, pita bread, white sauce and a smidgen of hot sauce. We've read all the warnings around the hot sauce, so we told the guy we only wanted a little bit, but he definitely gave us waaaaay too little. It was such a small amount that you can't even  really see it in the photo! Before we tried it, we thought that maybe even this amount was going to give the food a lot of heat, but we were wrong. And because we had so little of it, we can't really comment on how hot the sauce actually was, but everything thing else was delicious! Salty, saucy and filling! We also had the sandwich, which was pita bread with chicken, lettuce, white sauce and the tiniest amount of hot sauce. This was good too, but the platter was definitely better. In true street food style, we ate our meal on some benches right across the food cart, which I think really forms part of the experience. The Halal Guys have a number of carts around New York (and even restaurants) so they're pretty easy to find.
