#235 | GYUKATSU MOTOMURA

TOKYO, JAPAN

Gyukatsu is breaded, deep fried cutlets of beef. Similar to the better known pork tonkatsu, this is like the beef equivalent of that. The beef is served with an already crispy outer layer, and cut up into bite sized pieces, but is still red inside. There's a small burner on the table for you to grill it further, which is such a novelty. The meal comes with a bowl of barley rice, thinly sliced cabbage, potato salad, miso soup and pickles. Once the meat is cooked to your liking, dip it into the sauces provided, and enjoy! We had an extra side of grated yam and also a speciality serving of fish stomach for that night. From a foreigner's perspective, we could have gone without the grated yam and fish stomach haha, and there was a set menu without these 2 items. It wasn't an accompaniment we enjoyed very much, mostly because of the texture. Of course, I'm sure there are plenty of people who will like this, but it was not for us. Gyukatsu Motomura is a great place to try gyukatsu and they've got a number of branches in Tokyo. We arrived at one of their Shibuya restaurant, and after seeing the line, we headed off to another one in the same area. Fortunately, we made the right call. While there was a still a line, it was much shorter, and we only had to wait about 20 mins before getting a table.
